The Summer Reading Challenge has been extended to Saturday 6 February for you all to have a chance at the lucky dip box. Bring your bookmarks back and see what you can win.
Movie seats are booking fast
The Cinema is returning on Saturday 13 February with the Australian movie Rams. Doors will open at 7.45pm for an 8pm start. Seats must be prebooked via the Library as no walk-ins allowed on the night. Seats are limited so book in early. Seats are almost booked out.
Junior Book Club
This year I am introducing a Junior Book Club for kids in years 4, 5 and 6 once a month on a Wednesday at 5pm. The first session is on Wednesday 10.
The club is for all types of readers. Once a month we will meet to:
discuss books that you are reading
encourage you to select books that you normally wouldn’t choose
encourage you to select books that you think are above your reading level
recommend/swap books amongst the group
and most importantly have fun
Please come and help me give the club a name.
Weddin Shire Book Clubs
In 2021 I am also offering those who want to create a Book Club an option to access book kits containing 10 copies of a single title. The guidelines and registration form is now available at the library. Titles that are available for Clubs only is available at https://grenfellpubliclibrary.org.au/book-clubs/ This list is currently growing.
Free online Author talks
The free online author talks are back for 2021. Starting with an interesting talk covering Greek Australian Milkbars and Cafes: Past and Present on Tuesday 9 and then later in the month there is a free talk with the author of the new book The funny thing about Norman Freeman.
1,000 Books before school program
The 1,000 Books before school programme encourages early-childhood literacy and introduces young children to the world of reading.
Parents can join children at any stage during the year. The target of 1,000 books may seem huge but can easily be achieved in less than three years with little effort.
If the child attends Storytime at the Library or the Grenfell Pre-School & Long Day Care Centre, the books read will count towards the 1,000 total.
All stories read or listened to on Story Box Library, BorrowBox and Indyreads all count as well.
Children will receive certificates as they reach the milestones of 50, 100, 250, 500, 750 and then 1,000 books to mark achievement, so when the child starts school or preschool they will not only have a handful of awards to show their teachers and classmates, they will also have a head start in learning to read and write.
More information can be found at https://grenfellpubliclibrary.org.au/1000-books-before-school/
For those starting kindergarten this year please have your completed logs to me by Saturday 6 March to receive your final certificates.
Story Box Library now available to be accessed in Library
Some people would have noticed the new TV that has been installed in the kids’ section of the library. We have hooked up the Story Box Library for you to utilise while in the library. Just ask next time you are visiting.
Options for eBooks & eAudiobooks
Are you aware that as a member you have free access to different platforms for eBooks and eAudiobooks? Don’t forget that for the kids we have free access to Story Box Library. More information is available on the library website at https://grenfellpubliclibrary.org.au/elibrary/
